Shan Oakes stands in Haltemprice and Howden by-election July 10

"Someone has to stand for REAL civil liberties."

"The current 28-day detention period - which David Davis voted for - is nearly four times longer than that of most comparable democracies. "

25 Jun 08

"There is no way David Davis should have this by-election all his own way. He is an establishment high Tory. He voted for war, he voted for ID cards, he voted for 28 weeks detention. We can trust them with civil liberties as much as we can trust Labour with war!

"We owe it to voters to offer them a REAL alternative to a party committed to war, to big business, to a growth economy damaging to other countries, peoples and planet.

"Greens have consistently fought all the attacks on civil liberties - not voted for ID cards as Davis has! He won't even vote for the Human Rights Act.

"If the voters truly believe in the cause of civil liberties they should vote Green in this by-election."

Shan.
