Shan Oakes: Brazilian rainforest destruction at record levels. 15 Jan 08 Shan
Oakes, Green Party, Beverley, says, “Thursday was a dark day for the
world. Only
months after Thursday’s
report shows destruction is now suddenly running at 366 square miles a
month for December compared to 94 square miles in August 2007. “What
on Earth is going on?! This is not just Brazilian farmers doing
this! They are being driven to it by international demand for crops like
Soya and short-lived grazing. Here
we clearly see the so-called free market freely destroying some of the
greatest biodiversity on the planet.” A
report shows the rate of loss is unprecedented for this year and may
actually be worse when all satellite data is analysed. “If
