Shan Oakes:

Brazilian rainforest destruction at record levels. 15 Jan 08

Green Party representatives, this week, are deploring the recent announcement of the unprecedented loss of Brazilian rainforest.

Shan Oakes, Green Party, Beverley, says, “Thursday was a dark day for the world.

Only months after Brazil celebrated a success in achieving some reduction, we now learn the destruction of the Brazilian rainforest is up to record levels!”

Thursday’s report shows destruction is now suddenly running at 366 square miles a month for December compared to 94 square miles in August 2007.

“What on Earth is going on?! This is not just Brazilian farmers doing this! They are being driven to it by international demand for crops like Soya and short-lived grazing.

Here we clearly see the so-called free market freely destroying some of the greatest biodiversity on the planet.”

A report shows the rate of loss is unprecedented for this year and may actually be worse when all satellite data is analysed.

“If Europe’s farmers can be subsidised in their work then surely Brazil ’s can be helped to save the most important natural resource on the Earth!”
