Shan Oakes:

ERYC refers back multinationals plans for Driffield

Congratulations to ERYC Planning Committee on their wise decision.

At their meeting today at County Hall they referred the incoherent tangle of planning applications regarding Driffield back to the drawing board.

It was quite clear that the proposals did not meet the agreed needs of the town and they recognised this. It is a triumph for reason and for unique market towns in the face of the lobbying power of the big corporates.

Congratulations also to the Town Council and the people of Driffield who came out to demonstrate yesterday, particularly to the young people who vociferously raised the real needs of young people in the town. There is no doubt that you supported the elected members in reaching their decision – one which puts people before corporate profit. Let's hope for more decisions like this one which defend local community, character and enterprise and say NO to huge multinationals which give us rumbling juggernauts and unfairly traded goods and take the heart out of our local communities.
