The voter turnout in Hull was a disgraceful 20.7%. The major parties votes will have suffered a lot and with such a low turnout anything could have happened.

And so for the first time we had UKIP come first in Hull. Much of this will have been a protest vote, including a protest at Europe, along the lines of "You've got too much power. And we can run our own country thank you!"

It was disgruntling to come second to the extremist BNP as the campaign also included a fair amount of work by the local UAF group.

Politics abhors a vacuum and with 80% of Hull not voting, the smaller parties got a look in. Unfortunately, instead of respecting the steady work the Green Party has been doing, regionally and nationally, the parties to gain most were the right-wing parties, largely as a protest.
