EU candidate Shan Oakes, calls for objections to proposed GM planting in Tadcaster in April.
Shan Oakes, EU Candidate, Beverley

You may have heard that Leeds University  is planning a GM trial in the Tadcaster area from April 1st 2008.

The Green Party, Friends of the Earth, the Soil Association and other organisations are absolutely clear that:

"genetic engineering … can only add to the problems created by industrial agriculture.

GMOs will give large profits to a few multinational corporations, as opposed to making farming easier or more efficient."

 - from the Green Party's Manifesto for a Sustainable Society.

The public consultation ends on 3 March.

It is hoped there will be an emergency meeting on this next week.

Shan Oakes further supports: the possibility of a GM free label being adopted nationally along the lines of the label being promoted in Germany:

As GM crops are being fed to us through the back door via animal feed it makes sense to be able to steer clear even if something is not organically grown.

Here is the Soil Association report on GM animal feed and the need for labelling.
